Adopt Don't Shop

Adopt Don't Shop

All of our dogs have been rescues one way or another, whether it has been from a rescue center or someone going to throw the puppies away, each dog has always been in need of a home.
Phoebe and Bonnie

The amount of dogs that are up for adoption from different rescue centers is unbelievable, along with other animals as well.  A lot of them will have come from homes that no longer want them due to their age or because they now have a baby however some do go to rescue centers as they now have no where else to go and not due to their owners fault or them no longer being wanted.

I hate going to rescue centers, it makes me so sad to see the animals that are in there looking for a new home.

Phoebe's First Day Home
Mrs Murray's Cat and Dog Home

This is where our gorgeous Phoebe came from! She was found abandoned on the streets of Aberdeen and no one went to claim her.  She was around 4 months old when she was found and spent 3 months in their care.  We were the lucky ones who got to adopt her! When Mikey went to look at another dog, who was very similar to Phoebe, she didn't get on with Bonnie (my mam's dog), this is a big thing for us as they would be spending time together.  When they were waiting for Coco to come out, Mikey and my mam had a look at the other dogs in their care in the kennels and had noticed Phoebe who was jumping up to be seen and give her kisses! When they got to meet Phoebe she couldn't wait to get to Mikey to love him and then see Bonnie, kisses galore and belly rubs!
Phoebe now is the most affectionate dog ever, she loves to cuddle and give kisses, she has to be touching you one way or another even if it is just her bum on your leg.
I believe she feels more love towards us because we rescued her from a kennel where no one wanted her.

Mrs Murray's don't always put all of their animals for re-homing on their website so it is always worth a visit to them to find out what they have - link at the bottom

Gerogie's First Day Home
Scottish SPCA

Our newest addition to our family Georgie, he was adopted from the SSPCA in Dundee.  He was found abandoned in woods at only two days old.  Georgie and his brother survived but it was very hit and miss for Georgie as he was very underweight, dehydrated and not growing at the right speed.  He had a few tough weeks however he is now all OK and a daft crazy puppy that he should be.
The SSPCA have done so much for Georgie, taking care of him from him being very ill, he got to go home with staff members to be looked after until he was big enough to be re-homed.  Here is the link to Georgie's Scottish SPCA story - Scottish SPCA Georgie's Story
Remember they also have different animals as well for re-homing to check out - link at the bottom

On our way home in the car
Dogs Trust

My first dog Paddy came from Dog's Trust West Calder, he was an old boy at 13 who unfortunately through no fault of his own ended up in rescue as his dad was taken into a nursing home. When I was looking for a dog, I was just coming off crutches and he wasn't scared at all of them!
Again they have a lot of dogs up for adoption ranging in all shapes/sizes/age and all they want it someone to love.

Fostering

A lot of rescue centers have a fostering scheme.  Some animals don't take well to being in kennels etc. and have separation anxiety or just don't show their best side.  Fostering means the dogs are able to go home on a night or even stay full time with a family to help them come on and be the best they can be before being re-homed.  This is something people do just to help, they aren't paid for this they take on the dogs trying to help and also assess their needs and what home they would best suit meaning they get exactly what they need.

Adoption Fees

A Happy Paddy at Christmas
I've seen people complain about adoption fees as if they should be re-homing a dog/animal for free.  The fees cover so many things from vet treatments, micro chipping, food etc. this is what helps keep rescues up and running, along with any kind donations that people make to the centers.  Some animals that go into rescue need a lot more care than others, take Georgie for instance, he had numerous vet visits and even stayed over night for one trip to help him get better, the money we paid to adopt him will cover some of this cost but not all, so other donations will have helped cover this.
Each rescue have different fees for re-homing they will never be the same from one place to the next, but don't let this put you off, think about the animals you are helping with the donation and the one you are saving.

Exploring Gerogie
Personally I always promote adoption, to me the feeling of getting our dogs home and being able to take them from kennels to being loved makes me feel happy.  A lot of dogs and other animals end up in rescues due to them getting too big, another family member coming along, an un-wanted gift, a dog or cat or animal isn't for as long as you want them, they are for life and if you can't make that commitment then don't get a pet.  Remember there are also local rescues to you that will have animals for rehoming or need small donations, these don't always need to be monitory it can be bedding, food etc.

Are you a dog owner or pet lover? Did you rescue yours? Phoebe and I would love to hear from you in the comments
